Luxury Car Storage in Kansas City
Classic and Collector Car Storage in Kansas City

A collection takes years to build, and the right storage protects that work. Kansas City summers are humid, winters drop well below freezing, and a car that sits for months feels both. This guide covers what collectors around Kansas City look for in storage, how to get a car ready for winter, and how a private garage suite at The Lux in Overland Park fits into that.
What a collection needs from storage
Stable conditions. Swings in temperature and humidity are hard on paint, rubber seals, leather, wood trim and electrical systems. The fewer swings a car goes through, the better it holds up.
Security that matches the value. A collection deserves more than a padlock. Gated entry, cameras and a record of who comes and goes all matter.
Access on your schedule. Many storage facilities set gate hours or require an appointment. Collectors usually want to stop by on a Saturday morning or late on a weeknight without calling ahead.
Room to grow. Most collections don't stay the same size. Ceiling height for a lift, floor space for another car and room for tools and parts all make a difference later.
A place to enjoy it. For a lot of owners, the storage space is also where they spend time with the cars, care for them and share them with friends.

Getting a car ready for winter storage
If a car will sit through the Kansas City winter, a little prep in the fall makes spring much easier. Always follow your manufacturer's storage guidance first. These are the common steps:
- Wash and wax the car, and clean the interior so nothing attracts pests.
- Fill the tank and add a fuel stabilizer, then run the engine long enough to circulate it.
- Change the oil if it's close to due, since used oil holds contaminants.
- Connect a battery maintainer. Every suite at The Lux has its own 200-amp electrical service, so a maintainer can stay plugged in all season.
- Set tires to the recommended pressure, and consider tire cradles for longer storage.
- Leave the parking brake off and use wheel chocks instead.
- Use a breathable car cover rather than plastic.
- Block the exhaust and air intake against rodents, and leave a reminder on the steering wheel to remove the blocks.
- Talk with your insurance agent before changing coverage on a stored car.
With 24/7 access, you can also start the car or check on it during the winter whenever you like.

Sizing a suite for your collection
Every suite has 18-foot ceilings, which leaves room for a four-post lift to stack two cars in one bay or for a mezzanine above the floor. Most suites have 14x14 overhead doors. A few common layouts in Phase II:
| Layout | Approx. dimensions | Approx. size |
|---|---|---|
| Standard suite | 30 x 50 ft | 1,450 sq ft |
| Extended-depth suite | 28 x 62 ft | 1,680 sq ft |
| Drive-through suite | 28 x 124 ft | 3,385 sq ft |
Drive-through suites have doors at both ends, which helps with larger collections and trailers. If you send Laura a list of your cars, she can suggest the suites that fit best. View the site map and suite details.

Building out the space
Owners have added four-post lifts, mezzanine lounges, epoxy floors, bathrooms and kitchenettes. Climate control is available on select suites. Each suite also has its own electric meter, insulation and soundproofing, so the space is ready for whatever you add. Some owners set up a gallery for the collection, and others add a lounge above the cars for watching races with friends.
Owning or leasing
Suites at The Lux are deeded real property you can own, and leasing is available too. Phase II suites start from $370,000, rent-to-own is offered on select suites, and financing is available subject to credit approval. Our own or lease guide walks through both, and current pricing is on the availability page.
A community of people who care about their cars
Every owner and tenant can use the two-story clubhouse, with lounges, a kitchenette, a conference room and entertainment screens. It's a comfortable place to meet other collectors or host a few friends before a drive. If you own a Porsche, you might also like our post on garaging a Porsche in Overland Park.
